Los Primos Mexican Food Restaurant
Mexican Fare-Regents Road, 92122

los primos mexican food restaurantWalking into a Mexican dining establishment, one would anticipate blaring, Mariachi-infused smatterings from both the patrons and the restaurant workers alike. This is no such place! I was surprised to be greeted with a peaceful ambiance, followed by a kind smile from the cashier, as I walked through the restaurant entrance. As usual, the 10pm line of hungry patrons created a 5-minute wait to reach the front counter. This lent ample time to peruse the large menu that spanned the front wall of the restaurant. Monster burritos, combo platters, breakfast served all day. After some thought, I ordered my usual: a quesadilla and a carne asada Health Mex rice bowl, sans beans (I find their beans to be on the salty side and actually take away from the overall tremendous flavor of the rice bowl itself).

Several long rows of tables and chairs awaited me, but I was enticed by the hot carrots and salsa bar. Bagging up some hot carrots took some deft maneuvering on my part, what with the hot carrots positioned far behind the salsa bar that grasping the top of the handle for the tongs to reach the hot carrots requires a firm grip. I have had the hot carrots before, and I like that there is the right amount of crunch and heat. The clumsy maneuvering for the hot carrots is well worth the effort.

After a short 10-minute wait, my number was called. My order was ready!

My salivation glands were waking up, as I dug into the quesadilla, first tasting the flaky and light tortilla crust. The perfect amalgam of yellow and white cheeses melted together, pulling apart into long strands when bitten into. I especially like that the quesadilla is not oily, keeping my fingers and hands from a greasy feel, and yet, there is no compromise in taste.

The carne asada Health Mex rice bowl was delicious. My visual senses were met with the Mexican flag in its truest form: a stripe of sour cream in white, freshly chopped tomatoes in red, and chunky guacamole in bright green. I dug into the three layers of sliced carne asada, red rice, and sauces, and met a wonderful mix that delighted my palate. The sweet tomatoes and guacamole were balanced with the salty rice, and the carne asada, its crunchy exterior and soft interior, gave the bowl a balance of textures.

Los Primos Mexican Food Restaurant in UTC is a must-try, especially to satisfy the late-night cravings, as this location is open till 11pm.
