Although Shogun is located in a well-isolated spot in the dark corners of Kearny Mesa, its popularity is astounding, as same-day reservations for teppanyaki dining here is almost impossible to secure. Walk into the restaurant, and the atmosphere brims with excitement. Chefs at each open grill put on an exhilarating show, lighting fiery volcanoes, juggling knives in the air, and tossing food into hungry mouths of patrons, like the little, eager seals they are. It's an amazing spectacle to be seen.

For a friend's birthday last night, we were seated around a large grill. I ordered the New York steak and Diver Scallops, and my meal came with "clear onion soup, salad with ginger dressing, grilled shrimp appetizer, Hibachi mixed vegetables, and rice", according to the menu. The food was delicious, in part, because each grilled item was slathered in butter, and, also in part, by the blur of alcohol drunken in good cheer and celebration. I had one Sapporo and a shot of sake, so I remember very little in the way of details of the entire meal, but I do remember being amazed that throughout the entertaining show and the five or so swigs of sake, the chef was still able to grill the food well. I would think it's very easy to overcook and under-season steak and scallops in the face of distraction, but it wasn't the case at last night's dinner. My steak was tender and perfectly-seasoned and the scallops were cooked to perfection. The chefs at Shogun are skillful masters of their art.

If cost is of no concern, as it is in the case of celebration or special occasions (prices for teppanyaki here can be upwards of $30 per person), then Teppanyaki at Shogun is recommended for an entertaining and delicious way to spend an evening.
